레베카 Rebecca

 

평범하고 수줍음 잘 타는 미국 여성(조안 폰타네)이 몬테 카를로에서 다소 뻣뻣한 고용주 맥스 드 윈터(로렌스 올리비에)를 만난다. 몇년 전에 아내 레베카와 사별한 부유한 신사 맥심은 아직도 전처를 잃은 슬픔에 고통스러워하는 듯하다. 그렇게 다소 불안정한 심리 상태의 맥심과 미국 여성은 사랑하게 되고, 결혼한 후에 콘웰에 있는 대저택 '만다레이'로 돌아온다. 그런데 두번째 드 윈터 부인은 보이지 않는 압력을 피부로 느끼게 된다. 즉 대저택은 아직도 죽은 전처 레베카의 짙은 영향력 아래 놓여 있었던 것. 집안일을 책임지는 가정부 댄버스 부인은 그녀를 미칠 지경의 노이로제 상태로 몰아간다. 하지만 남편 맥심은 자신의 심적 고통 때문에 미처 아내에게 신경 써주지 못한다. 마침내 드 윈터 부인은 가정부의 살벌하고 냉혹한 모습에 기가 질려 두려움에 떨고, 그들 부부의 결혼 생활은 위기 상황을 맞이하게 된다. 한편, 죽은 사람이 산 사람을 지배하는 '만다레이' 저택에는 비밀이 있는데...
